View faxes directly on your handheld

Let your faxes find you...
If you receive your faxes via email or a web-based account, you can view them directly on your Palm OS wireless device wherever you are. You don’t have to stand by your computer or fax machine waiting for your faxes. Now, you can truly receive your faxes anywhere.

AcidImage Pro will enable you to efficiently view, share and organize all your incoming fax documents.

No file conversion required, no proprietary format limitations. AcidImage Pro supports native TIFF (Fax) image viewing optimized for the smaller PDA/smartphone screens.

Overview [back to top]

AcidImage Pro enables you to view your fax and image email attachments directly on your handheld or smartphone as easily as you would on your computer. AcidImage Pro seamlessly integrates with many Palm OS email solutions.

Most Palm OS email applications require the use of third party application such as AcidImage to view email attachments. AcidImage Pro is the application you need to view TIFF, JPEG, GIF and BMP file attachments.

Your complete mobile solution
The Treo 600 and Treo 650 combine a full-featured mobile phone and Palm OS organizer with wireless applications like email. AcidImage Pro is the perfect addition to the Treo smartphone for viewing fax and image email attachments.

Now, all you need is a way to view your email attachments. Chances are your email application does not support all types of attachments. To be able to view TIFF, JPEG, GIF, and BMP files you need AcidImage Pro.

Download evaluation version of AcidImage Pro

If you will need to view fax documents, make sure to install the Pro version. This is the version that supports the TIFF file format. Electronically delivered faxes are commonly sent as .tiff files.

With AcidImage Pro installed, you should now be able to view fax (TIFF) email attachments, in addition to image files (JPEG, GIF, BMP) directly on your Treo.

Fax-to-Email Services [back to top]

In order to receive a fax via your email account, you will need to set up an account with a fax-to-email service provider. If you already receive faxes as email attachments on your PC, you are all set. Just make sure you receive your faxes as .tif files.

If you still receive your faxes the old fashion way, you should set up an account with one of these fax-to-email service providers. Depending on the company and package you choose, you will receive a unique fax number. Faxes sent to your new fax number will be sent to your email account and you will receive the fax as an email file attachment.

A few Fax-to-Email service providers to look into:

Captaris Right Fax Enterprise fax server and e-document delivery offerings provide market leading solutions that enable organizations of all sizes to deliver application and user-generated documents via fax, email or over the internet

eFax Receive and send faxes directly from your email account. Personal, small business and corporate level fax solution packages.

maxemail Receive faxes as email attachments in PDF or TIF format. Get your own personal unique fax number in the U.S. and Japan. Send faxes anywhere in the world using your email client or the maxemail web interface.

myfax MyFax is an email-based fax service. MyFax lets you send and receive faxes from your existing email account, without a fax machine.

All of these services support sending faxes in the .tif file format. If the .tif file format is not set as the default file type you may be able to configure your account to do so.

For example, if you use eFax to receive faxes via email, you can configure your eFax account to receive faxes as .tiff files and view them directly on your Treo Smartphone (or other Palm OS device). No eFax-specific software is required on your handheld, just AcidImage Pro.

Viewing Fax Email Attachments [back to top]

Each email application has a slightly different process for viewing email messages and attachments. In general, from your Inbox, select an email message that you want to view.

Set AI Pro as the Default TIFF Viewer
With some applications, you may need to set AcidImage as the default viewer for selected file types. To associate AcidImage Pro with the file types that you would like it to open:

  1. Launch AcidImage Pro
  2. Tap the "Menu" icon in the graffiti area
  3. Tap the "Options" menu item at the top of the screen
  4. Tap the "Receive Types..." option from the drop down menu
  5. Select the image file types you want AcidImage Pro to be associated with
Set Email Application Default Image Viewer (General)
If you tap on the filename and AI Pro does not launch automatically, you may need to set your image viewer application preference within your email application.

  1. Tap on the attachment icon next to the filename to access a pop-up menu.
  2. From the pop-up menu select "Select viewer"
  3. From the "Select viewer" dialog box, select the viewer you would like to use: AI Pro
  4. Tap "Done"
  5. Next, tap the name of the attachment to view it using AI Pro.
Going forward, your email application should remember this preference and automatically launch AI Pro when you tap on the attachment filename.

Set AI Pro as the Default Viewer (VersaMail users)
VersaMail users can set AI Pro as the default VersaMail viewer for TIF image files by tapping on the yellow icon in VersaMail.

  1. Tap the yellow icon to the left of the TIF attachment.
    A pop-up menu will appear:
    View
    Select Viewer...
    Save to Card...
  2. Tap on Select Viewer...
    A dialog box will open:
    "Select Viewer"
    Type: TIF
Viewer: (drop-down selector) Photo/Video, Media, AI Pro
    (Done) (View)
  3. Most likely "Photo/Video" will be selected. Select "AI Pro" from the drop-down selector. Tap (Done)
  4. AI Pro is now set as the default for VersaMail. Now, tap the file name of the attachment and AI Pro should launch.

Note: Tapping the yellow icon and "View" will then also default to AI Pro.

If AI Pro does not start, go through steps 1 and 2 above. Be sure to tap "Done" in step 2, not "View". Tapping "Done" in step 2 sets AI Pro as the default VersaMail viewer for TIF. If you use AI Pro to view other file types, you may need to do steps 1 and 2 for those file types as well.

Download Attachment to Your Handheld
Most email clients do not automatically download the email file attachment. This saves time and space on your device and lets you choose if and when to download a specific file attachment.

Although the download process is handled slightly different depending on the email client you are using, you need to select the file attachment you want to view and download the file before you can view it.

Once the file has been downloaded to your handheld, simply tap on the file name again. AcidImage Pro will automatically launch and load your fax or image.

Enjoy Remarkable Image Quality
You can now use the features of AcidImage Pro to view your fax. AcidImage Pro retains all the original image properties of the fax to provide the highest quality image possible. The fax image is initially resized to fill the entire screen so you can get a clear overview of the document before zooming in and out to view all the detail.

Zoom and Pan
To zoom in and out, tap the zoom tool icon in the lower left-hand corner (magnifying glass icon). Use the zoom tool bar to zoom in and out. Drag your stylus (or finger) across the screen to pan around. To hide the zoom tool bar, tap the "Hide" icon at the right end of the tool bar.

Zoom in and out to view all the details of your fax.
View Multiple Pages
It is easy to view multi-page faxes. All pages of the fax will be available - just press the page down button (or "down" on a 5-way navigator) to view subsequent pages. Press up to view previous pages. If you are viewing a very large file, it may take a moment for the next page to load.

Note: Make sure you are in image view mode rather than in zoom-tool bar mode to view you want to view all the pages of your fax. Pressing the page up and down button while in zoom mode, will zoom-in and out of your image.

Refer to the AcidImage Instruction Manual for additional information.

Forwarding Faxes (Bluetooth, IR, Email) [back to top]

It is easy to forward your fax/ TIFF image file to another device such as a laptop, handheld, or smartphone.

Options include sending with Bluetooth, beaming (infrared) or using your wireless email application.

Since AI Pro maintains the original image data and does not convert the TIFF image file to a proprietary format the receiving device receives the fax in it's original form.

Saving & Organizing Files [back to top]

To exit the image view and return to your email, simply tap the "Close" icon at the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Before you exit AcidImage Pro, you will be prompted with an option to save the image you are viewing. If you would like to save the image so that you can view it again without having to open the email message, check the box to save the image. If you do not want to save the image, do not check the box. At this time, you can either exit to return to your email or you can stay in AcidImage Pro.

Within AcidImage Pro you have the option to set your "Save Received Images" preferences. Select if you would like to automatically saved images received from external sources, such as email, to either RAM or on your memory card.

Common Questions [back to top]

Q. Can I use AcidImage Pro to open email fax attachments received using GoodLink software?
A. AcidImage Pro seamlessly integrates with GoodLink wireless email software. It is easy to open and view fax email attachments received using GoodLink.

AcidImage Pro enables you to view the native TIF fax file. Since the fax is not converted to a proprietary format, you can forward the original fax to another device.

GoodLink version 4.0 is now available.

Q. I tapped on the email attachment filename, why didn't the fax automatically open in AcidImage Pro?
A. AcidImage Pro should launch and display your fax when you tap on the email attachment. If not, there are three things to check:

  1. Double check that you have the "Pro" version of AcidImage installed. The other AcidImage products do not support TIFF files.
  2. Make sure that AcidImage Pro is installed in RAM and is not stored on your memory card. If AI Pro has been installed on your memory card, your email application does not know that it exists and will not be able to launch it.
  3. And, make sure both your email application and AI Pro settings have been set to use AI Pro as the default TIFF image viewer. (see step by step instructions above).

Q. How do I view the subsequent pages of my fax?
A. Press the page down/ page up buttons (down/ up on a 5-way navigator) to view subsequent or previous pages.

Q. Why do I need AcidImage Pro?
A. Third party applications, such as AcidImage Pro, are necessary to view various types of email file attachments. Your email client may not support all the different types of file attachments. If you receive faxes via email, you need AcidImage Pro to view your fax documents. With AcidImage Pro you can also view JPEG, GIF and BMP files.
